/  Dermatology in the News!   /  Dry or Dehydrated?

Maybe you aren’t familiar with the term dehydrated, when it comes to your skin.  Water in the skin contributes to that healthy plumpness that everyone desires.  The moisture level in the skin attributes to a healthy smooth glow.  The winter months here in New Jersey tend to pull all the hydration out of the epidermis.  Your skin’s outer most layer is called the stratum corneum, this layer is made up of dead skin cells filled with keratin proteins that are structured like brick.  Dehydrated skin, is skin that has lost a good deal of its water content, and it can appear more rigid and less plump than hydrated skin.  Transepidermal water loss is when water passes from the dermis through the epidermis and evaporates.  Circumstances such as low-humidity in weather conditions, injury or topically applied products can all impact TEWL. If your skin lacks oil production, that is something different than dehydration. An under active sebaceous gland, can be more of a long term issue called  Chronic Dry Skin.

Taking less than ten minute tepid showers and moisturizing the body and the face immediately after bathing can really help to lock in moisture.   No one enjoys having dehydrated, lack luster skin I’m sure.  Exfoliating regularly can really help the appearance and health of the skin. If you can’t get in to get routine chemical peels or dermaplaning treatments, it is wise to use a cleanser or exfoliator with glycolic or salicylic acid at home depending on if your skin is oily or not.  Some over the counter products designed for acne can in fact lead to more problematic skin issues because of harsh ingredients like fragrances, alcohol and preservatives.  Many of our medical providers recommend Cerave or Cetaphil gentle cleansers and moisturizers as a simple inexpensive method of cleansing and moisturizing the skin.

Here at Connolly Dermatology we recommend gentle cleansers and moisturizers and the use of an SPF all year long.  If you have been experiencing dry skin, or are not happy with your current skin care regimen, we are here to help.  Dr.Connolly has made the ultimate Rose Hip Gentle Anti-Aging Cleanser that virtually any skin type/condition can use.  It will leave the skin nourished and ready for treatments such as our anti-oxidant serum and moisturizer. If you are a product junkie like some of us are, you may want to consider incorporating a mask once a week at home. We’re huge fans of the Farm House Fresh line for its wholesome pure ingredients and good ethics.  The Pajama Paste is my personal favorite. It has yogurt with active cultures, honey and oats.  Or better yet, come see me for a free consultation and i can can recommend products and help you set up a regimen that best suits your skin type.  We pride ourselves on taking care of our patient’s skin and giving them optimal results with little to no down time.
